Mahopac Public Library is proud to present first-run, award-winning foreign and independent films from the world’s top film festivals through FILM MOVEMENT. If you can’t make the film festival, the festival will come to you! Each month, the library will show an award-winning new release on DVD. Film Movement selections are chosen from the world's top film festivals each year including Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and New York. After the screening, each film will be added to the library collection! The Film Movement Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Mahopac Library.

Donating items to your Library:

Are you cleaning out your attic, basement, or your bookshelves? Consider donating your books, audio and video items to Mahopac Public Library.

The Library accepts donations of material in good condition; items that are moldy, falling apart or broken, nibbled or gnawed, are not accepted. We also do not take magazines, encyclopedias, text books and Reader's Digest condensed books.

Donations can be left in the large green bin outside the Library. DVDs, books on CD, music CDs or video games that are being donated can be brought to the Circulation Desk in the Library. We are happy to provide you with a donation letter that you may use in accordance with the IRS tax regulations.

Please do not take items out of this bin to purchase! Skilled volunteers from our Book Barn will sift through these donations - some of the items will be added to our collection and the rest will be sold in the Book Barn which is run by the Friends of Mahopac Library. All of the money raised in the Book Barn comes back to the Library to help us provide programs, equipment and collection materials.

The Book Barn is open Tuesday 1-8; Wednesdays 10-2; Thursday 2-7; the first and third Saturdays and second Sunday of every month from 1-4. You can always find books for sale ($1/item) in the lobby of the building during the Library's regular hours. Watch for extra Book Barn Hours in December!

The Friends of Mahopac Public Library provide essential support for Library-wide collection development, programs and special events that are offered at the Library.

Mary De Bellis, Head of the Reference Department, notes that "the Friends group has enabled the Reference Department to significantly augment the adult and juvenile nonfiction collection with subject-specific books and DVDs which satisfy the educational, recreational, and professional needs of our patrons."

This year the Friends contributed more than $10,000 towards the purchase and support of the following:

* Children's feature film DVDs
* Special events for children and families including the end of Summer Reading party and a live Wolf event
* Fall 2010 Computer Classes
* Adult Workshop instructors
* Library furniture including new stands for music CDs and a display unit for the Youth Services area
* Shelving for our expanding collection
* CD/DVD disk cleaner
* Memberships at cultural and educational institutions including the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Museum
* .....and much more!

The Friends raise funds to support the Library through activities such as the Book Barn, the annual fall book sale, and through special projects such as the recent quilt raffle. They do an outstanding job of managing the incoming Book Barn donations, stocking the shelves in the lobby with books and audio/visual items, and staffing the Book Barn throughout the year.

From time to time, items from the Book Barn are donated to veteran's and children's groups, or are sent to our troops overseas.

Q: What have the Friends done for the library?
A: Through the proceeds of the Book Barn, membership dues, and fund-raising activities, the Friends this past year have contributed more than $16,000.00 for library programs and services. We have been able to sponsor a series of multi-cultural programs including Latin dancing, Brazilian music, and Japanese calligraphy. We have also funded the acquisition of pod-casting software, sound equipment for the Teen Players, Discovery Kits for the Children’s Room, and the new canopy at the front of the library. Additionally, we have been able to assist the library to purchase books, DVDs, audio books, and CDs. These all enhance the Library’s service to the community.
The Friends manage the Book Barn which offers gently used books and videos at very reasonable prices. The Book Barn is located in the library basement and may be accessed either by elevator or by stairs. Donations of used books and videos may be left in the Book Barn bin currently located to the right of the main entrance of the library, beyond the exterior book return drop.
A selection of books and videos from the Book Barn is available for sale in the lobby during Library hours.
